Discipline vs. Motivation: What does it really work for weight loss?
Weight loss is a long-term process that requires effort, time and determination. Many start full of motivations, but after a few days or weeks the enthusiasm fades. Then the question comes: Is it more important for successful weight loss discipline or motivation?
Motivation: Strong start but short breath
Motivation is an emotional impulse that kicks us. It can be a photo of the past, the desire to turn on your favorite jeans, or a negative note from someone close. It is these moments that often make us start.
However, it is unstable. It is influenced by mood, environment, stress or fatigue. If one relies only on it, it can very easily happen that after a few failures, they lose the desire to continue.
Example: In the morning you are full of enthusiasm, take a healthy breakfast and plan your training. In the evening, however, fatigue, stress and sweet taste come. Motivation is gone - and if it is not supported by discipline, there is a problem.
Discipline: boring but effective
Unlike motivation, discipline is the ability to act even when you don't want to. It is a habit to follow the plan - regardless of whether you have a good day or not.
Discipline is built over time. Initially, it can be difficult, but the more often you make the right decision, the easier it will be. The discipline helps you continue even when the motivation fades.
Example: You're tired, but you're going to exercise for at least 20 minutes. You don't eat the whole pizza, but only half. Not because you feel motivated, but because you promised. And you keep it.
So what works better?
Motivation is like a spark - they ignite the process. But the discipline is like a fire that keeps it. Short -term changes can be done with enthusiasm, but for long -term results you need a system that you will also follow if you do not want to.
The combination of both works best:
Start with the motivation to kick you.
Build a discipline that will hold you when the motivation drops.
Creating habits that do not require thinking - eat regularly, moves daily, enjoy a good sleep.
How to make the discipline easier?
If you want to simplify the discipline, set the environment to help you:
Throw away unhealthy meals from the house
Prepare your food for more days in advance
Exercise clothes ready in the evening
Write down progress - even little successes motivate
The fewer decisions you have to do during the day, the easier you will keep the plan.
Motivation will start you. The discipline gets you there.
If you really want to lose weight and keep the results, don't just rely on mood or impulse. Build a system that becomes a lifestyle. Even if you're not perfect, it is important to move on.
